The 1st gives you the right to say what you want in whatever language you want... Being that in the US the national language is english its best to speak in the language thats widely understood.... Don't you think? -

Sure, you can speak what ever language you want.
That doesn't mean I need to go out of my way to understand what you are saying -

This also doesn't mean that anyone should tell others to "Speak English" .

Yes! Do you think its right to tell someone who speaks English and other languages to "when in public you need to speak English." Who the hell is anyone to say that?
(people need to mind their business)
I've been in situation's where at Gas stations or 7-11 the guy behind the counter will have an accent and the person buying the stuff will have a hard time understanding what he is saying. It's pretty simple, slow down and just listen! The idiot in front of me just keep going "what... what are you saying... what are you saying.... what?" interrupting the guy as he spoke.
There's many, many people that do that. For what reason? Beats me.... Idiots? insecure? sad? angry?
And when that same guy behind the counter raises the prices on you... I've heard people tell him " to go back to his country" .... Haha I think most are forgetting where they came from... or their great ancestors who are not natives of this country either ! -

" What can you do"
I can make changes within myself and adjust. Align myself with what we the people have decided to be right and allow that freedom for others. I can do this. In doing this the contact, communication and influence we have on each other will compliment and illustrate the changes I've made. Leading by example.

It is true. My husband is Scottish. His accent is very easy to understand but there were times when I was in Scotland when I swear the man at the pub or in the shoppe was speaking a whole other language to me. Still if I can't understand someone I ask them to slow down and I work extra hard to listen.

Re: "This is America"
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 2:03 PMNo one in Colombia has harassed me for speaking English yet.
If they don't understand, they don't understand, and that means I lose, so I figure that's MY problem.
OTOH, I'm at least TRYING to use Spanish.
