Is this really the way to deal with technical problems? Why would I want to pay for a networking site full of bugs? Where s all that Cisco money? Where is the Cisco technology that could make this damn site work right? Oh yeah, Cisco sucks. I forgot.

Re: Pay for tribe?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 10:10 AMI don't like the idea because they will have both premium and basic accounts. That means that we will still have the alt problem and people that don't have the "gold star" will feel beneath people with premium accounts. It's not like they will offer you much more anyway. I think it should be a paid membership for everyone or free for everyone. Not both. Tribe makes a shit load of money from Google AdSense, i don't feel sorry for them.
Have you seen triberefugees.ning.com/ yet? It's pretty cool place i think with great features plus, you can really customize your page. Once you get use to it, it's just as good over there. -

I agree. Anonymous donations would be better.
I don't like the whole concept of trying to peer pressure people into things.

Do you have any facts to back up that statement?

I think that their tech team is one guy. -

Fri, November 30, 2007 - 11:53 AM>Do you have any facts to back up that statement? <
The fact that i have an adsense account so i know how much random traffic clicks on ads by mistake or otherwise make and considering how many hits tribe gets a day...it's a lot...it really adds up.
And by their own admission tribe makes enough to pay two full time employees that live in the SF bay area (extremely expensive) plus are able to pay the hosting. But that's all they are admitting to. I'm not convinced they are not making any profit at all. I think this was a well thought out strategy to get their paid service rolling, from sympathy votes.

Re: Pay for tribe?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 3:26 PM<Tribe makes a shit load of money from Google AdSense, i don't feel sorry for them.>
This is not true. Tribe reportedly makes less than $5K/month on the ads.
The point about Tribe, Rik - is that one does not have to 'get used' to another system when Tribe is the best ever for this kind of communication. I honestly do not understand the problem with the paid vs. premium memberships. Some people will donate, and others won't. What's the problem? The differences will be just visual differences for a while.
moderators.tribe.net/
Read about it here.
<i'm trying to get a sense of how hilariously incompetent their tech team is.>
"tech team"? It's one guy named Darren. Ever worked on a number of servers that has thousands of users? It ain't easy.

Re: Pay for tribe?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 4:40 PM>This is not true. Tribe reportedly makes less than $5K/month on the ads.<
You say not true, yet say they "reportedly"make less than 5k.. So really, you don't know if it's true. That would mean Wendy and Darren work for around 2000 bucks a month...in SF?? I don't think so..you can barely pay for a studio there for that much.
The problem is, you say tribe is the best ever for this kind of communication when in reality, it's the people that frequent tribe..not the service. Tribe isn't offering anything unique here that you cant find someplace else. If the people that visit tribe go someplace else than you have the same thing. And why does tribe expect to be paid, when all the other guys built there traffic up resulting in huge revenue checks from ad clicks? It's not our fault the guys that run tribe can't manage to make this site more successful. Why does that mean they get a free ride from us? And they are not asking for donations..they are asking people to pay for their service and in return you'll get to run around the network with a shinny gold star, making people that don't have the star feel inferior. It's no that i can't afford 5 bucks, but not everyone can pay for online services for whatever reason. 5 x say 300, 000 memberships??..A MONTH....really? they just hit the jackpot..that would be all profit in their pockets for doing nothing more than what can be found elsewhere for free. Has tribe really been behind us..have they really been looking out for our best interests? Fuck no, they sold the damn code to someone else and then started new projects not giving a damn about his site.
Plus, i want all the alts gone if i'm paying for this place.
Sorry, i think it's bs -

Re: Pay for tribe?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 5:30 PM<>This is not true. Tribe reportedly makes less than $5K/month on the ads.<
<<You say not true, yet say they "reportedly"make less than 5k..>>
I say, "This is not true" because I have had conversations with people purportedly in the know, and I am to understand that they DO NOT make a lot, and not "a lot" is reportedly (and I may be wrong) ! $5K/month. So. Yeah. The world is gray, Rik.
<The problem is, you say tribe is the best ever for this kind of communication when in reality, it's the people that frequent tribe..not the service.>
I strongly disagree. I believe that it is the system that is so great. I am on other boards for different issues, and there are some very, very interesting and knowlegable people there, so I can assure you that in my experience, it's the design/tech that is so great, not simply people like you and me.
<Tribe isn't offering anything unique here that you cant find someplace else. >
Again. Not true. Tribe has the best designed system for communication on the web, in my experience with the internets, and I'm someone that has been pretty involved with the internets in a professional manner for a long time. Tribe engenders communication better than any other site that I have ever used, and I've seen lots of 'em. Let me know if you know of one that is better, please.
<It's not our fault the guys that run tribe can't manage to make this site more successful.>
This I agree with. That said, if Tribe goes, we all lose something, so I'd like to help forestall that possible eventuality. Why did Facebook catch on and Tribe did not? I do not know. Why did Friendster die, even though it was around before Myspace? Good question.
But, all irrelevant. I find value in Tribe. That's all that I care about.
<And they are not asking for donations..they are asking people to pay for their service and in return you'll get to run around the network with a shinny gold star, making people that don't have the star feel inferior.>
That's the most laughable shit that I have heard yet. HA!!!!!!! Seriously, Rik. You're OK by me, but that's the worst nonsense that I have seen on the subject. "inferior"? Really? Really?
No one can make you feel inferior, Rik. And, if someone having a gold star or a cool icon makes you feel inferior - well, that's a larger problem for you than any issue or how one tiny aspect of Tribe makes you feel inferior.
<5 x say 300, 000 memberships??..A MONTH....really?>
I am guessing that MAYBE 1,000 people will pay. Probably less. We'll see.
<Fuck no, they sold the damn code to someone else and then started new projects not giving a damn about his site.>
My understanding is that if they did not do that, Tribe would have ceased to exist at this point. So........I don't know what to say about that.
Well, I'm in support of it. Darwinian economics is not always a positive thing. Ask the Dodo and internet-era flameouts.

Re: Pay for tribe?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 6:24 PMI have also been on the net since the early 90's and i've seen a lot of different forums. What are these great designs and technical features that can't be found elsewhere?
Tribe offers:
A personal profile..... found elsewhere? -yep..tho elsewhere you can actually show some character on your page.
A personal blog..... found elsewhere? -yep
Public/friends only features...found elsewhere?..yep
Photo albums...found elsewhere?...yep..tho elsewhere you can find much better photo sharing features
Forums.....found elsewhere?...yep. Does this forum offer any unique quality?...nope
um...anything else?
You're wrong Andrew, it's the people. ..and if they all get together someplace else to chat then you have the tribe experience. In fact a lot have already gone to triberefugees.ning.com. Hey, people it's free over there!
And you can laugh up the inferior comment but i think you know i wasn't speaking for myself. That's a stupid idea that creates separation and this experience is suppose to create the opposite. If, it's all about donations only, than people should have no need to advertise that they donated.
You don't know what to say about them selling the code because there is nothing you can positively say about it. They sold us out and then used that money on other things. Simple as that. If tribe cared about the people here that money would have been used to upgrade the network.

Re: Pay for tribe?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 7:55 PMTribe is still free-you don't HAVE to pay.....so don't get your panties in a bunch!
I have a blingy MySpace Profile I customized way more than the one on Tribe, so yeah, you can do that at Myspace (or where-ever). However, the ads are overwhelming, the groups pretty hard to follow a topic on, and I for one don't want to post a bunch of pictures on MySpace for stalkers or serial killers looking for their next hit to get all of your personal details (MySpace seems to attract that element.).......also the people at Myspace aren't that informed or interesting, from what I 've seen. Most of them are around 18 years old........ They probably know everything there is to know about Britney Spears personal life, but have no idea about anything else going on in the world.
So I guess I like the people at Tribe and would be really bummed if it went down. Except the ones who don't want to be here-all I have to say is don't let the door hit you on the way out! -

Re: Pay for tribe?
Sat, December 1, 2007 - 4:25 PM<You're wrong Andrew, it's the people. ..>
Um.....no. I do not believe that I am.
Tribe offers more than just the same things as Myspace. Do you go on myspace to discuss different issues? How many tribes do you go to every day and discuss the issue of that tribe? Personally, I probably use two or three every day, and maybe 10 or so per week. I NEVER use Myspace for such a use. NEVER. I don't use any other networking site for group communication because......
.........Tribe's threading and communication features are the best EVER that I have seen.
So, while Tribe offers many of the same aspects of every other communication site, the #1 Tribe improvement over everyone else are these discussion boards. That's why we are here.
So, no. I am not wrong, it's not the people - it's the system. There are LESS people here on Tribe than there are on Myspace, so how in the world can you suggest that "it's the people"? Nope.
<and if they all get together someplace else to chat then you have the tribe experience.>
Nope. Only Tribe has this kind of threading, which is the best that I have ever seen. Again, there are something like 30 million people on Myspace who "get together". Why do they not have a really successful group communication? Hmm...........
<In fact a lot have already gone to triberefugees.ning.com. Hey, people it's free over there! >
Their communication sucks. That's why people are still here.
<They sold us out>
Um.......how did they sell anyone out? Do you own Tribe or have any kind of investment here? You are a user of a free service that sold the tech to another company because (reportedly) it was about to go out of business otherwise.
<and then used that money on other things.>
Like what? How do you know that they got one penny for anything?
<If tribe cared about the people here that money would have been used to upgrade the network.>
So, what did they spend their money on. Since you seem to know what they spent their money on, I'd love to hear what the specifics are.

Re: Pay for tribe?
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 6:56 AMI agree Andrew.... it's the system more than the people.
Alot of the same people here are on Myspace and Facebook too.
The people here rock of course, no doubt about that, but Tribe IS unique above all other discussion groups and free spaces that I've seen.
Why critisize how much money they will make? Perhaps they will be able to add more features such as exchanging music and vids in the future. I'm sure if anyone here were skilled and ingenious enough to become rich creating ROCKET web sites and online services you would not hesitate. It's not like the non-paying are being booted off and only the paid users get to stay.
Geez whats the fuss?
Perhaps I too will buy the premium soon. I just don't like the 'star' attached to the profile.
Tribe Rocks!

Fri, November 30, 2007 - 11:08 AM5 bucks a month is nothing, that's not really the point. I just don't like the idea of having both premium and basic..it will just lead to even more separation and class issues here. Plus i want all the alts gone if i'm paying money

I'll even pay a scholarship or two. Hell, it's only the price of a fancy-ass coffee.
I like Tribe *so* much better than MySpace and Facebook. It's like MySpace with some brains. Even with all the crap that goes on here, I've still learned a lot and met some fascinating people.
All that happens on MySpace is, I discover some old friends of mine sure post a lot of stupider-than-shit bulletins (surveys, silly "housewifey" heartwarming crap and urban legends and hoaxes about puppies, kittens, and children supposedly dying of leukemia, etc. etc.) -

A lousy $60.00 a year and you get the premium service and they say SIR when they pick up the phone.
Yah ya get a personal 800-dialup for complaints and a concerige who will help you hack the offending triber's PC and send him a DEL TREE.
It's going to be great~!!
What will Tribe do for Mods of large tribes? Give 'em a platinum star and a HumVee with a 50 Cal on top?

Re: Pay for tribe?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 4:35 PMI don't even care about the star-I just want to see Tribe continue without selling out to the Corporate whores that are trying to take over the Internet like they have the radio and TV and many print medias. I believe that Cisco doesn't own Tribe any more-I was told that the originators bought it back to keep the entire Tribe experience from being shut down or ruined.
As I hear it, they have 2 full time workers to pay and the server to keep up and running. They do not have a full time systems engineer to do maintainence on the site and that's who they are hoping to hire. They make around $5,000 a month on advertising which isn't really much in the grand scheme of things.
I like the Tribe format and the cool, thoughtful people I have met here (for the most part). Everytime I come over to Tribe I learn something new, participate in a few great discussions, and spend some time looking around at things I would not experience otherwise.
I have been less than thrilled with my MySpace networking-I get the people who are sending out these lame surveys over and over, or looking for a hookup, or are just plain idiots (is it me, or do far too many of them get caught up in falling for some sort of a Phishing Ploy....so that a supposed "Friend" or "relative" suddenly is trying to sell you a ringtone or trying to get you to fill out a lame survey for a fake gift card every single day) The main reason I am over there is to keep up with a few relatives and friends I would never see otherwise, since they all live so far away.
Tribe people are thinking people. There is a lot more thoughtful communication on this site. Even when people don't agree with me, they put a lot of thought into their communications and I learn something from the experience.
I would be sad to see Tribe go, and be left with the lame-o options that are out there.
So, for approx the cost of 1 latte a month (less than the glass of wine I bought last night!), I get to hang with the "cool crowd" and get invited to great events and get to put in my 2 cents.....
