There's an old saying in Tennessee -- I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee -- that says, fool me once, shame on -- shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again.

Is there anyone out there who would like to tell me to vote for John McCain? Please, give me one reason, any reason to vote for John McCain. Something solid to hold on to.

  • What about the "Republican Ideals" or platform? Isn't there anyone supporting McCain that inherently believes Republicans to be better than those communist terrist lovin Dimocrats?

if your belief is that obama is better qualified and will do a better job then you should vote for him. and either you believe that McCain is just a neo-conservative surrogate or that indeed he is his own candidate. and if it is truly the latter then at least give him the benefit of the doubt and stop repeating the party line. these conversations are mildly interesting when you believe that the guy on the other hand is at least making an effort to express his own beliefs as opposed to parroting sound bites.
      • Because if you don't vote for McCain, you're *forcing* his operatives to steal your vote and throw it away uncounted. You not voting Republican in this crucial year (in which Lady Liberty is more endangered than ever by godless, atheistic commu... er... liberalism) makes you guilty of tempting good middle-class Christians into crime and imperiling their souls.

Voting GOP on your own is plainly the Right Thing To Do...
      • What part of my question is party line?

I'm for Obama for my very own reasons. Mostly, I tend to believe, because I don't like cowboy diplomacy. Talking to our enemies sounds like a better plan than nuking them.

So far in this tribe the rightwingers seem to support nuking Iran. Isn't this basically John McCain's position?
  • Well gee why don't you line up your priorities and see who fits.
That'd be the best way to think about it.

I could tell you all the reasons that work for me but they might resonate so much with you.

    • don't bother Cliff. you realize this is just an excuse to throw out caricatures of some people think you think. and the fact that either of us posted that they should vote for the candidate they think will do a better job will just be spun into something to match their narrow-minded view of what constitutes a vote for McCain. there is no reasoning with dogma.
      • Why can't you relax the caricatures yourself and try giving something to a discussion other than this endless reactionary and simpleminded bleating? Can't you fucking change records? Jesus, man - you used to have good arguments. You sure have sucked for the past few months. What gives?

Tell the man why he should vote McCain or don't - but give this tune a rest.
        • "Tell the man why he should vote McCain or don't - but give this tune a rest.
          reply to this post "

Amen. All it speaks of to me is a real lack of any arguments in favor of McCain so far. I'm obviosly, and openly, supporting Obama, but can't anyone give me a reason to support McCain.
          • Well for one, i am not a mindless party shill that continuously bleats pro-party talking points; actually, I find that whole approach to politics generally offensive. And, as was mentioned before, it would depend on what issues you find important
            • That was clearly the same comment you made previously, we get it.

However, I'm not a mindless partisan. Just a realist. I want the world to be a better place tomorrow then it is today. Therefore, I would offer that given choices 1. Democrat or 2. Republican. One party is clearly, clearly worse than the other.

Both parties are corporate whores, of this there is no doubt. One party combines this tendency with a religious zealotry and makes it worse.
              • "However, I'm not a mindless partisan. Just a realist. I want the world to be a better place tomorrow then it is today. Therefore, I would offer that given choices 1. Democrat or 2. Republican. One party is clearly, clearly worse than the other."

No, apparently you do not get it. People have different ideals, and so, what constitutes a better world is subject to opinion. Thus, making broad generalizations is a waste of my time

          • << "Tell the man why he should vote McCain or don't - but give this tune a rest. >>

James Joyce (in ULYSSES) called something as wearisome as this "the tune the old cow died of."

Gob help us every one if any here should find the GOP or its nominees uproariously funny. The very idea someone might get offended just *breaks* my fucking heart, I can tell you.

    • One of the most convincing arguments I have heard for voting for McCain is that things have to get a lot worse before they get better. John McCain could be the man who could push things over the edge faster than the alternatives.

Thats sort of a negative way of looking at things though.
      • I use to let this type of thinking slide. But since GW Bush got into office, I'm of the opinino that this theory has been proven silly.

Back under Clinton I would say, well it might have to get worse before people pay more attention. But with the wreck Bush is leaving in his wake, it is truly astonishing to think that it needs to get any worse at this point?
        • "I use to let this type of thinking slide. But since GW Bush got into office, I'm of the opinino that this theory has been proven silly. "

Bush has been horrible for the American people, but he has bankrupted our country and destroyed our standing in the global community, and weakened our military ground forces in Iraq. Another 8 years of that kind of president, and maybe we wont have a United States anymore, and we can come up with something better.....the reason I agree that its not a good way of looking at things though is because of the level of destruction that might result. I worry about the possibility of nuclear war, and dont look forward to the possibility of martial law and civil war.

I am convinced however that our system of government is broken beyond repair. The reason things have gotten so bad is not just because we have necons in office, but because we Americans are too pacified to fight back and stand up for our rights. The government is corrupt because we allow it to be corrupt. Voting should not be the extent of our power.

      • Why? Well, let's see:

        1) You're a racist?
        2) You don't give a fuck about anyone but you and yours?
        3) The environment is nothing but a way to make money and animals should be either on your plate or in a zoo.
        4) Oil is more important than anything else, and you think that there's no problem with using it instead of looking at other options?
        5) 'Civil rights' are a quaint memory of the past and you believe they should stay there.
        6) You think that spending a trillion dollars in Iraq and the loss of over 4K American men and women was worth it.
        7) Taxes are for the lower and middle classes.
        8) You think that corporations should get better access to our policy-makers than citizens.

Anyway - I could go on and on. You get the idea.

    • This is the type of advertising I can get behind. The Republican Brand needs to be totally discredited for the forseeable future.

stop repeating what you hear on the fake news. doesn't it embarrass you at all to parrot fake terms created by paid hucksters?

as for my vote. I've come to terms with the fact that candidates need to say certain things to get elected. so everything McCain and Obama say right now doesn't matter to me. but I do believe from the logistics and posturing of the parties you're not going to get that quick withdrawal you've been promised. so the selection process I make is based on experience and a leadership. by leadership I mean a willingness to break with the party for what the candidate feels is best for the country. McCain endeared himself to me a long time ago when he championed the Gramm Rudman Balanced Budget Act. so he's done more than play lip service to balancing the budget. as for Obama, there just isn't anything except hype and a bestseller to base things on. his stint in the state senate in illinois makes me nervous that he is beholden to certain power brokers. so I tip towards McCain. If the Dems had chosen Biden I'd be singing a different tune.
        • <as for Obama, there just isn't anything except hype and a bestseller to base things on. his stint in the state senate in illinois makes me nervous that he is beholden to certain power brokers.>

That is sadly and terrifyingly true.

There is so much hope heaped upon those untested shoulders. My hope is that when he gets to the White House, he'll do a great job - that's the only 'hope' that he instills in me.
