Valuable lesson coming up, pay attention.

I was at the store, and started chatting with an older lady. She needed help getting something down from a higher shelf. We talked about animals for awhile (it was in the pet food section). And went on to talk about where we lived and neighbors, etc. She at one point looked around to see if anyone was on our aisle, and lowered voice to talk about "those people".

In this case, "those people" were Filipino. The entire group of people who come from the Philippines were represented (as it turns out) by ONE family that lived near her. Because of what that ONE family does, that she suspects, without proof, the entire country was labeled as "those people". And it was the way "those people" raised their kids to be hoodlums. Based on ONE kid.

I said "Yes, there are many different cultures in this world, many ways of raising children" to which she agreed. Then I added, that I had been raised in a white middle class area, and each of my friend's parents couldn't have been much different. Some parents were very strict, some were very lax. Some parents had to know where their kid was all the time, and others just sort of turned the child loose on the world when the child was old enough to run amok on their own. Some parents fussed over their kids and some didn't even seem to care about the kids.

The lady thought about it. She said said "You're right. It is like that."

And in her older age she had begun to be racist, and she won't be anymore. Nipped it in the bud. I prefaced the description of child-raising with "when we were kids", even though her late husband had fought in WW2, long before I was around. Even so, parents will have their own ideas about kids and what to do with them and how much involvement they want to have in their child's life.

That goes for most anything. There are vaster numbers of differences than similarities under a heading. A heading of a place of origin, or a job/profession. You can say "all mechanics are mechanics" but that doesn't mean they are good ones, bad ones, or can even work on your car. They could be tractor mechanics or jet plane mechanics. They might be able to fix your Lamborghini, but can't fix your toaster oven. They can fix a dialysis machine, but can't put a chain back on a bicycle.

I personally don't care for the various skin color assignments and propose that people make the distinction not based on origin or ethnicity, but instead by Pantone color. You can view some colors over in their Colorstrology section:

Instead of one color supposedly representing everyone, it would be much nicer to have skin color being regarded as "Caramel, 16-1439" or "Doe, 16-1333" or "Peach Bloom 15-1327".

And it sounds as ridiculous as it really is, to state to someone that coming back from a ski trip, their forehead is now a sunburned "Spicy Orange" that you can't be friends with them anymore because their skin color is not one of your pre-approved colors for friendship.

Or that you will only befriend people who get dark enough during summer and disown them during winter when they get pale.

What next? Holding up one of those tooth enamel color charts that comes with Arm and Hammer toothpaste to see if people have the right color of tooth to be a friend?

Short of the tranq dart and the bear fur, we all kind of wake up one day and have a realization of our skin color being different...not the same as everyone's, and we assign values to it. Our parents or society might assign values to it. Our cultures or origins might assign a value to it.

But it's really no different than being a Pantone color, and it sounds utterly ridiculous and terribly empty to assign people a value based on whether they are closer to one color or another.

---by supporting data, do you mean that you just post a link to some website? That is what most of you do. But you don't take the trouble to explain how the link supports your case, and you expect people to read through however many pages of whatever link you have provided to hunt for whatever support it provided. I suppose this is how the wikipedia generation thinks you provide supporting data.

Putting on a real case takes more than that. Sorry if I don't have enough interest to put on full blown trials for your education here on tribe.

Folks will attack whatever is handy. And it is easiest to attack things that are right out there in public. I made a very short blog, on this kind of problem.

As soon as you tell someone what you do, some will find a way to use it against you. As soon as you post photos of friends and loved ones, you too can get the Palin treatment. ;)

Then if you complain, you will be told that you brought on yourself. No, really. You will be. Because YOU volunteered information, or responded to what someone said.

There's something about people's opinions being formed about a person in the first minute of interaction. Online that can be text. Also checking the profile after reading text.

You will be assigned a label at that point. By that person. And you will be liked or disliked based on that label assigned by that person. You cannot please all the people, all the time.

You could try. You can have thousands of photos in which you've photoshopped yourself into everything...You can be the first man on the moon. You can be a redwood tree sitting rebel. You can buddy up with all presidential candidates, including dead ones. You can stand on the bow of the Santa Maria saying "I'm the king of the world" as well as being the one to claim new lands with the universal claim rights legalese, aka "DIBS".

And you can be the change you want to see. Don't judge people solely on their job, their friends, the photos they have, or, GASP, their sunglasses!

Valuable lesson coming up, pay attention.

I was at the store, and started chatting with an older lady. She needed help getting something down from a higher shelf. We talked about animals for awhile (it was in the pet food section). And went on to talk about where we lived and neighbors, etc. She at one point looked around to see if anyone was on our aisle, and lowered voice to talk about "those people".

In this case, "those people" were Filipino. The entire group of people who come from the Philippines were represented (as it turns out) by ONE family that lived near her. Because of what that ONE family does, that she suspects, without proof, the entire country was labeled as "those people". And it was the way "those people" raised their kids to be hoodlums. Based on ONE kid.

I said "Yes, there are many different cultures in this world, many ways of raising children" to which she agreed. Then I added, that I had been raised in a white middle class area, and each of my friend's parents couldn't have been much different. Some parents were very strict, some were very lax. Some parents had to know where their kid was all the time, and others just sort of turned the child loose on the world when the child was old enough to run amok on their own. Some parents fussed over their kids and some didn't even seem to care about the kids.

The lady thought about it. She said said "You're right. It is like that."

And in her older age she had begun to be racist, and she won't be anymore. Nipped it in the bud. I prefaced the description of child-raising with "when we were kids", even though her late husband had fought in WW2, long before I was around. Even so, parents will have their own ideas about kids and what to do with them and how much involvement they want to have in their child's life.

That goes for most anything. There are vaster numbers of differences than similarities under a heading. A heading of a place of origin, or a job/profession. You can say "all mechanics are mechanics" but that doesn't mean they are good ones, bad ones, or can even work on your car. They could be tractor mechanics or jet plane mechanics. They might be able to fix your Lamborghini, but can't fix your toaster oven. They can fix a dialysis machine, but can't put a chain back on a bicycle.

I personally don't care for the various skin color assignments and propose that people make the distinction not based on origin or ethnicity, but instead by Pantone color. You can view some colors over in their Colorstrology section:

Instead of one color supposedly representing everyone, it would be much nicer to have skin color being regarded as "Caramel, 16-1439" or "Doe, 16-1333" or "Peach Bloom 15-1327".

And it sounds as ridiculous as it really is, to state to someone that coming back from a ski trip, their forehead is now a sunburned "Spicy Orange" that you can't be friends with them anymore because their skin color is not one of your pre-approved colors for friendship.

Or that you will only befriend people who get dark enough during summer and disown them during winter when they get pale.

What next? Holding up one of those tooth enamel color charts that comes with Arm and Hammer toothpaste to see if people have the right color of tooth to be a friend?

Don't make me get you with a tranq dart and dye your bear fur to look like this:

You'll say "Hey, I had nothing to do with this, I had no control over what color I became, I just woke up and realized I was a different color, I was pink and blue and yellow"

Short of the tranq dart and the bear fur, we all kind of wake up one day and have a realization of our skin color being different...not the same as everyone's, and we assign values to it. Our parents or society might assign values to it. Our cultures or origins might assign a value to it.

But it's really no different than being a Pantone color, and it sounds utterly ridiculous and terribly empty to assign people a value based on whether they are closer to one color or another.

But I think that everyone should get chances to make good. It's only too late when people are dead. They can't exactly change then.

People are taught to be racist. That's not a natural state. It's a reflection of the culture. Of the politics. Of the neighborhoods. Of the religions. But it's not a NATURAL state for anyone to be racist.

Babies develop preferences for their parent's looks, which includes skin color. It behooves us as a worldwide society to hope. To hope people can learn or relearn. Otherwise we really would throw out the baby with the bathwater, since babies can be messy, smelly, uncivilized little ones.

The horrible thing is that racism makes perfect sense. It's a struggle for humans to live in a way that eliminates racially divisive thiking patterns.

Humans are genetically predisposed to cling to the familiar and mistrust the unfamiliar. It's a survival mechanism.

So the people who have the same languages, physical appearances, whose foods smell similarly, etc., tend to group up. This starts a ball rolling. Others not part of that clique see them less and less as individuals and more as part of the larger group. That's threatening. They are identified by race. It doesn't matter whether you are on the minority or majority side, these dynamics are real and very much a part of the human experience.

To get past all that people have to work at living among each other finding common ground and working that. It's not a natural thing to do. Once you raise a couple of generations that way it's less an issue but old habits die hard. When there is strife people revert to the old genetic predispositions.

I'm not like that.

This loathsome creature has been banned, warned, scolded, and humiliated; yet he still can not manifest the smallest degree of self control.

No, it's not complaining to have a lark at his expense.
And it points out how deeply troubled and defective he is.
And makes sure that he can't hide from the grotesque thing he is.

This is his body of the greatest accomplishments that he will ever achieve. This is the apotheosis of his life. From here on it is all down hill.
Some day (prolly in the next decade) he will be in a back alley, inebriated, and staggering trying to tell some one, who could not care less, about how back in the day he showed that guy. It'll make Springsteen's "Glory Days" seem absolutely joyful.

Maybe he ought to preserve this thread some how as a keep sake a memento of the best he ever achieved.
