I heard somewhere today that the GOP is going to focus on domestic security, in other words, do Americans feel safe? Given this focus, they'll play up McCain's years in the foreign policy arena and his military background and Obama's inexperience. These are clearly McCain's strengths. On every other issue, he's just a typical republican with very little to offer. The question will be whether the electorate will decide this election on fear. If they do, McCain has a shot. I'm not so sure that the GOP will be successful this time, though they have scant few options. Obama is pretty good at piercing the fear factor.

See, this makes no sense - McCain's been fucking wrong about almost everything foriegn-policywise for years, from his early support of the Iraq War to his inability to distinguish Sunni from Shii'a. Why does anyone in their right mind regard horrible making mistake afer mistake "good experience"?

I dare say that for most Americans the whole Sunni/Shi'ia thing was as petty as the "sweety" comment by Obama. The war is unpopular but I doubt McCain will be held responsible for starting it, just wanting to stay in it. The Republicans will win if they play the fear card effectively. In a world where America is surrounded, even infiltrated, by existential threats, the electorate will default to the warrior, imo. It's all they've got and they'll play it for all it's worth for the next 5 months.

    McCain's greatest strengths are

    1) His reputation for being a "maverick" and an independant, and

    2) A compliant, worshipful media that's continues to bolster said reputation even though he is nothing of the kind and hasn't been for years.

The war prisoner thing helps too, of course.

I think one of his greatest strengths is to connect with people in small settings. He speaks in a soft tone that suits that type of situation well. i don't think he does nearly as well in large venues, and I think that is why he is challenging Obama to have debates that are in town meetings.

Kelly's got this right - the "maverick" thing, the fact that he is a media darling, and the war hero thing.

If he were ten years younger he would have a serious chance.

Sheik has got it right. In a small setting McCain is cordial, attentive and makes you feel as if you are important and that he cares what you think. He conveys sincerity and confidence. I have seen this personally. He still has those skills but he has gone wacko elsewise. This is disconcerting to me. At one time I had a lot of respect for him. .

I agree with the war hero/ POW experience. It is one of the trademarks of a truly great leader that you should never ask another person to do something that you would not be prepared to do yourself. Having a President who is a 'Chicken hawk' is hardly inspiring to a country that is embroiled in a war which has no immediate end in sight. The fact that John McCain actually knows what he will be asking young Americans to do, and knows about the sacrifice which they will be making for their country is a great asset. McCain has actually been through the worst of it.

This is in sharp contrast to a President who went AWOL from the Air National Guard and had a pretty shameful military record, yet lied about it later. Yet, despite the fact that he never went to the Vietnam war himself, was (and is) quite willing to send American service personnel into the battlegrounds which he himself avoided.

I don't see any reason why a president should have servedt all....and to have a president to be the commander in chief is insane to begin with.

Nr.1: i served, and had superiors who failed miserably as civilians.....to have served will qualify "you" for nothing at all...maybe to be a security guard .
Nr. 2: the USA has to get of this " the military is our holy cow" mentality.
Nr.3: do you really want an ex soldier who suffers untreated PTSD as president?
Nr.4: If he wants to bring up his service or tries to run his bit on it.......he should re-join the forces and not run for any political office......I for one want to see a leader not a wanna be general....( hell we got fucked with bush who served half ass...but still thinks he is general).

boy...you could go on and on.....
