I agree. Maybe not even that long. There should be some check if they become an incompetent jurist. Say if 3/4 of Congress votes to remove them. -

I think you're getting Stevens mixed up with Kennedy, who's currently regarded as the SC's swing vote (though he's been showing afar more rigtward bent lately).. -

When O'Conner was around, Kennedy was seen as a pretty reliable conservative vote. It's only because he's not on the extreme right that he appears "moderate". -

i don't see conservatives of today falling on the progressive side of those issues. weren't a lot of progressives of the early 1900s also considered to be treasonous and socialist and whatever epithet you want to attach? many progressives were associated with eugenics, too.
