I remember that Deep Impact mission. It was beautiful. I got up early to watch at the pictures come into NASA www.nasa.gov/images/cont...937-516m.jpg

It was right on target. One science writer said it was as difficult as hitting a bullet with another bullet 20 miles away, but thanks to our knowledge of science we hit it directly and learned a lot about the make up of the comet. It also showed us that if at some point in the future we have enough warning it may be possible to use this technology to deflect any object that might endanger our planet.

When it happened som nut job astrologer in Russia tried to sue NASA to stop the mission. Of course she was laughed out of court. It reminded me that 40 years ago some fundie Muslims were upset that humans were going to walk on the moon. Apparently like the nut job in Russia they view a big hunk of rock to be sacred.

I say horray for the Deep Impact mission and horray for NASA. It is one of the few things outside of social services that I am glad to fund with my taxes.
