LAGOS (Reuters) - Russian energy giant Gazprom has inadvertently walked into an online racism debate with the announcement of its new joint venture in Nigeria -- Nigaz.
The name is meant to be an amalgamation of "Nigeria" and "Gazprom", pronounced "nye-gaz", but can be read phonetically as an offensive term for people of black African origin.

I am wondering how the Russians and the Chinese will respond when "insurgents" attack their facilities? Do you suppose they will take the legalistic approach or simply send in the mercs to clear out the insurgents? -

Sun, July 5, 2009 - 11:30 AMThis does kind of remind me of the diet candy that came out in the 80's called 'A.Y.D.S'.
In all seriousness though, when will people start to consider that the resources in the continent of Africa really belong to the people that live there? Africa is one of the wealthiest continents in the world for natural resources, yet the people of Africa are among the poorest in the world. Diamonds, oil, gold, ivory and slaves, not to mention the countless priceless artifacts from Egypt and elsewhere, all stolen from Africa as though it was a big free for all.
Take a look at this picture of an 'Oil village' in Africa. These kids live a stone's throw away from refineries spewing toxic junk into the air and water. The rivers here are rainbow colored because of the oil floating on top.
