Insects and peppermints
Sat, December 6, 2008 - 5:46 AMI have read some articles saying that the most economical and environmentally friendly animals we can all eat would be grasshoppers and earthworms.
The eating of grasshoppers goes back as far as human history. They are in fact, listed in the Old Testament as one of the foods which is kosher (spiders are not). As far as protein production goes, the average square acre of grass produces more far more grasshopper protein by weight than beef, pork or chicken protein. Grasshoppers are also mostly free of the pathogenic diseases that fellow mammals such as cows and pigs (or whales or dolphins) might suffer from. Some people might scoff and say 'but grasshoppers are grouse looking', however lobsters are a popular food item and they are hardly any more attractive. Also, consider that lobsters eat the fecal matter and decaying corpses of other animals, whereas grasshoppers only eat grass.
A similar case has been made for earthworms. Earthworms are perfectly nutritious, and are said to taste like beef. A square acre of ground also produces more earthworm meat by weight and volume than can could sustain a cow, pig or chicken. Incidentally, the rumor that McDonald's hamburgers are made from earthworm meat has been proven false, since currently a pound (or kilo) of earthworms is more expensive ($30/pound for worms) than a pound of beef. This is due to a greater demand for beef.
One of the reasons behind the Falkland war in the late 1980's was because the tiny Falkland Islands happened to be close to the breeding grounds for Atlantic Krill. Scientists in England had determined that krill was 'the food of the future', that there would be an upcoming food shortage. Thus, securing the Falkland Islands would give Britain access to these shoals of krill which might mean the difference between a national food shortage and a food surplus for trade or sale. -

Re: Insects and peppermints
Sat, December 6, 2008 - 12:59 PMIn Thailand you can eat them an order them in the same way an American eats and orders a Hot Dog... Spiders too... Ewwwwwwww!
-
Re: Insects and peppermints
Sat, December 6, 2008 - 1:04 PMHmm haven't tried grasshoppers but I have tried fried crickets. They were just crunchy and didn't taste like much. The only disturbing part was feeling the antennae in your mouth. Other than that they were OK. -
-
Re: Insects and peppermints
Sat, December 6, 2008 - 1:21 PM>Ate Dog.....without knowing it....until I was told......( got really pissed off).........it was good.
yeah Dog is nummy.
I heard that in China put them in a bag and then beat them to death. the adrenaline and stuff makes them taste better. But then I asked a guy in Zhongdian and he told me that they just hit them real hard, once in the nose.
But then I was riding a bicycle around Yangshuo and this guy flopped a dead dog on his porch and started plucking it like a chicken- but there the throat had been cut. (but maybe just to drain it?)
so the mystery remains... Light colored dogs taste better than darker dogs... so they say...
crickets gave me a stomach ache. snake bile tasted like turpentine.

Re: Eat Whales - it's eco friendly
Thu, December 4, 2008 - 8:44 PMEat Humans - it's eco friendly
A carbon abating source and is good for the planet ..
......................
Causes of Global Warming
“As human-caused biodiversity loss and climate disruption gain ground, we need to keep our sights clear and understand that the measure of a threat is not a matter of whether it is made on purpose, but of how much loss it may cause. It's an ancient habit to go after those we perceive to be evil because they intended to do harm. It's harder, but more effective, to "go after," meaning to more effectively educate and socialize, those vastly larger numbers of our fellow humans who are not evil, but whose behavior may in fact be far more destructive in the long run." (Ed Ayres, editor of Worldwatch magazine, Nov/Dec 2001)

Re: Eat Whales - it's eco friendly
Fri, December 5, 2008 - 12:52 PMPerhaps this is why some of the indigenous peoples were 'cannibals'? To keep down the population? ;^)
Anyway, I feel that exploring a mostly vegetarian and at least less meat consuming diet is helpful all around. Plus, doing the best to eat only local or as close to home foods as well.

Eat Whales - it's eco friendly
Fri, December 5, 2008 - 4:50 AMI thought this was about Fat chicks
-
Re: Eat Whales - it's eco friendly
Fri, December 5, 2008 - 6:32 AMI would not recommend eating whale meat simply because whales live too long.
The longer an animal lives, the more toxic the meat becomes.
Eating whale is like eating swordfish x10. -
-
Re: Eat Whales - it's eco friendly
Fri, December 5, 2008 - 8:19 AMWhy eat whales or dolphins at all....? Really? I mean there are so many other great foods... These animals .... IMO, are better off serving in the oceans food chain than through the HUMAN food chain, i.e.; anyone's belly and then back in to the toilet....:) -
-
Re: Eat Whales - it's eco friendly
Fri, December 5, 2008 - 11:55 AMAs far as the taste and/or texture of whale meat goes...
Wasn't dog food made from Whale meat some time ago? About twenty or thirty years ago, in fact. I think that something like Dog food would be the general texture and consistency of whale meat. I suppose Spam would be the closest comparison.
I know that whale meat, like seal meat, is mostly fat/ blubber. This is an aquatic mammal's only means of insulating itself from the cold waters of the oceans. Blubber is like gelatinous fat. When whale hunters used to hunt whales in the 'Moby Dick' days, it was the blubber of the whale that they were after. The blubber was turned into lamp oil, as well as oil to make cosmetic products such as lipstick. Whale bone was whittled into scrimshaw. Whale skin made waterproof clothes.
Saying that the Japanese & Australians love whale meat is no real incentive to eat it. The Japanese eat lots of things considered unpalatable to the average American palate. The Australians love Vegemite as well, but few North Americans can stomach the taste of this edible yeast product.
This does make me think of a cartoon I saw though:
Hippie for Greenpeace: "Save the Whales!"
Joker: "Got one in the freezer, Geezer!" -

Re: Eat Whales - it's eco friendly
Sat, December 6, 2008 - 1:30 PM<I have read some articles saying that the most economical and environmentally friendly animals we can all eat would be grasshoppers and earthworms. >
ants apparently are the best, easy to farm in huge numbers, breed extremely fast, and are extremely high in protein, vitamins and low in fat. seriously, my friend has a mad zoologist professor Uncle who wrote a little book on it for the London Zoological society or some institute like that.
not sure what the best cooking method is though. -
-
Re: Eat Whales - it's eco friendly
Sun, December 7, 2008 - 7:51 AMInsects are great because their gut contains whatever you feed them.
Worms, OTOH, basically have to contain some kind of soil.
I can vouch for crickets (sold as pet food), oak beetle grubs and Colombian leaf cutter ants.
