BANGOR, Maine — The Army is weighing in on writer Stephen King’s remark about literacy and the military that drew the ire of conservative critics this week.
King came under fire from a blogger for what he told students while stressing the importance of reading at the Library of Congress on April 4: “The fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don’t, then you’ve got the Army, Iraq, I don’t know, something like that,” King said.

The ensuing flap drew a response Wednesday from Army spokesman Paul Boyce, who said most soldiers are avid readers. Military recruits test above the national average in reading and vocabulary skills, he added.
“America’s soldiers are proudly serving and fighting for us all. We can be proud of our soldiers’ selfless service, their skill and their ingenuity. They certainly are role models for every high-school student in America considering a noble career ... and many book authors,” Boyce said.
King’s office couldn’t be reached immediately for comment Wednesday.
Previously, King said Monday that he supports the troops but believes the war in Iraq is “waste of national resources ... and that includes the youth and blood of the 4,000 American troops who have lost their lives there and for the tens of thousands who have been wounded.”
“I live in a National Guard town, and I support our troops, but I don’t support either the war or educational policies that limit the options of young men and women to any one career — military or otherwise,” King said.

Such a shame that he has the audacity to make that kind of statement about the troops! You would think people would respect the men and women who serve this country a hell of a lot more!

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 4:09 PMWhat an idiotic thing to say, if he has any intelligence he will make the necessary plans to release a public statement and apologize for his words. I liked Stephen, but just because he can write goods books does not give him the credentials to bash our military. He has no knowledge about the military! -

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 4:19 PMIt depends on the intestinal fortitude and character of the individual. If someone is motivated, patriotic, and wants to better themselves the Army is a great choice. -

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 4:22 PM"Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and then Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums."

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 4:22 PMI was in the 82nd Airborne Division, Alpha Company 3rd Battalion 325 Airborne Infantry Regiment for over 4 years. By enlistment took me to Iraq, Honduras, Kuwait, and Qatar. I’m hell of a lot more qualified to talk about the Army than Mr. King! -

it's not that complex. even for the airborne infantry.

typical reactibot answer. the question was what you knew about KING's knowledge of the military, not what YOU knew about the military.
and i ventured you knew shit about kings knowledge.
ami right or not? -

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 4:35 PMI knew he wasn’t in the military Dzoner! Unless you eat, sleep, shoot, shit, and live the military you have no clue. You can read books and watch documentaries all day but until you live it you know nothing. That’s just the way it is bubba, it’s the cold hard facts there high speed. And how typical, attack my knowledge when King made the ignorant statement. Way to go trying to get off topic. -

that's just ignorant. and makes no sense.
why the black and white, the all or nothing, life is infinite gradation.
so is knowledge. there is a series documentry on pbs right now called 'carrier'. it shows actual life aboard aboard a carrier following a few people over time.
according to your logic, someone having watched this series would 'know nothing' about life on a carrier. whereas a sane rational person would say they now know a whole lot more of carrier life than they did before and have a much greater understanding of what it is like for the people serving aboard one than they did before they watched it.
what i just said is so clearly right, your statement can only be labeled ignorant and wrong.
but are you man enough to admit that?

Sat, May 10, 2008 - 1:07 AMDzoner, where you at man? You talked big and tried to make my credibility weak. But as soon as you realized that questioning an Iraq veteran of the war was frivolous you backed off. No disrespect to you even though you disrespected me but one way to learn from history is to listen to those who wrote it with there blood, sweat, and lives! -

i am a vietnam vet and spent my years homeless on the streets. your talk of listening to those who 'wrote it' with their blood weat and lives' means shit to me. the 'brave men and women' in our military just participated in the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of innocent people that did not attack us and were not a threat to us. if you are not vociferously against and denounce those who initiated and carried out this mass murder in our name, how is it you deserve 'respect'?
what, because you were a part of that machine makes it all okay? -

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 4:27 PMIf I’m not mistaken Mr. King never served in the military, and yet he feels qualified to make those kinds of allegations. Not practical at all! -

Sun, May 11, 2008 - 11:36 PMWhats him not being in the military got to do with it? His statement is 100% true. Just look up the enlistment rates for rich americans vs. poor ones.
