I read something that argued that if christians could get books banned from the library because they are anti-christian, then atheists should be able to get books banned that are anti-atheist.

what a schism in this country. . .how are we going to get past it. .

We may get past it when all books have been destroyed. Interestingly, I can see this happening.

whats the issue with that? Seems like it would have the benefit of constantly allowing the material to be updated and clarified, while at the same time cutting down on the use of paper.

              Not to mention, probably cheaper

haha, how clueless. how many working families can afford time warner, or several computers for their household so all the kids can complete their homework?

"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger warned that if the propositions failed, the state would have to take various measures, including borrowing some $2 billion from local governments, thus diminishing local services like libraries."

I'm guessing you have never heard of this thing called "the public library"?

Since you can only use the puters in the public library for an hour at a time, there are going to be a _lot_ of incomplete assignments.

Assuming that the library doesn't close before the kid even gets to the head of the line.

Sure, there are some details that would need to be worked out, but i can't see why it wouldn't work, if properly planned, nor do i understand the instant opposition

The instant opposition is because it is a stupid idea, even for a steroid-addled musclehead like Schwarzenegger.

Public libraries all over the state are closing. I happen to live in a city with numerous library branches. Not one of them is open seven days a week. Most are open only a few hours a day on the days they actually are staffed. Any students depending on computers in public libraries are simply going to be shit out of luck.

On the other hand, why not get rid of the books. Who needs them? We are going to be eliminating thousands and thousands of teachers, so there won't be anybody to teach from them anyway. And the classrooms are going to have so many kids in them none of them will be able to learn anything to begin with.

Maybe Schwarzenegger isn't such a steroid-addled musclehead after all. In fact, this begins to make a certain sort of sense.

That's rich. Proper planning from a state government that can't pass a budget. What a maroon....

I'm knowing you didn't hear anything about the pay cut. btw- public library computers are not a limitless resource and public libraries are not open 24 hours a day.

Are you referring to the news regarding school books and lead paint? (i think i remember hearing something about this).

I second the question - "Which maniac?" there are so many here.

The Gov is proposing an acceleration of the move to e-book textbooks in addition to having textbooks on computers they would be available on e-readers like the Kindle. Could save money, would make revisions much faster and cut down the weight of textbooks would also allow students to have a much wider varitety of texts and references at hand

The schools could provide e-readers and all the required textbooks for every student for less cost than the current cost of textbooks

Could they? Where is this money coming from?

The same place money would come from for buying books. And if there is no money for buying books, well, the whole discussion is kind of moot, anyway
